About
The Mendel on-demand storage service is available to research teams to meet the scientific data storage needs of ongoing research projects.
This storage is hosted in the Unistra Datacenter.
Key facts
You can request a Mendel storage space through our online form.
The creation of storage spaces up to 10TB is processed quickly.
Requests for space greater than 10TB will be discussed further with the applicant.
Project-based organization
The storage spaces on Mendel are provided "per research project ". Indeed, in order to ensure a good management of the data life cycle and to avoid large and disordered storage folders covering many different projects, we try to identify a research project for each storage space.
The ideal name for a project space is the acronym of the research project (ANR funding for example) to which it is associated. But you can compose with the species, the response studied, the technologies or methods involved.
Try to choose a short and simple name.
Avoid your name, the name of your laboratory or team or anything that is not relevant to your study.
Several conditions must be met for your data to be hosted for free on Mendel:
- The data must be associated with an ongoing research project.
- The data is used frequently.
- Data will be deleted from Mendel at the end of the project.
Each project space has a quota which is requested by the owner of the space at the time of its creation and which may change if necessary during the life of the project. Each space is also associated with a list of users authorized to read and write to it.
Inter-project space
Each research team benefits from a non-expandable inter-project space of 1 TB, accessible to the whole team.
Access
Each space is accessible from :
- workstations of the IGBMC internal network via the SMB protocol:
- MacOS/Linux:
smb://mendel.igbmc.u-strasbg.fr
- Windows:
\\mendel.igbmc.u-strasbg.fr
- the IGBMC cluster (
/shared/mendel
) - Globus (from January 2023), choose the "IGBMC Mendel" collection.
Backups
- Daily snapshots on the storage system, kept for 30 days
- Access to backups:
- under Windows: right click on the folder and choose “previous versions”
- under Unix systems (macOS or Linux): go to a project folder, then to the
.snapshot
folder. For example, for the project "evaluation_alphafold", you have to go to the folder/shared/mendel/projects/evaluation_alphafold/.snapshot
Replication
- Replication of the current version on a server located at the IGBMC, once a month.
Replication is a procedure to protect your data in case of complete loss of the storage system (destruction, irreversible failure, etc.). The infrastructure hosting the replica of the data is not adapted for production use and is not able to replace the Mendel storage system.
Pricing
Free for the year 2023. This pricing will be extended beyond 2023 if sustainable by IGBMC.
